Your Audio Guide to Life in the Netherlands
SecondSoil helps people moving to the Netherlands from abroad settle in, with human-recorded audio guides, practical articles, and carefully curated links to trusted Dutch websites and resources.
Moving here isn’t all cheese, tulips, and windmills. It’s also zorgverzekeringsmaatschappij (what a mouthful!), DigiD, housing contracts, insurance, recycling rules, and a lot of unfamiliar systems.
SecondSoil is an audio-led guide to Dutch life, created to make all of that easier to understand.
Listen to short, conversational audio guides, read practical articles when you want more detail, and follow carefully selected links when you need to go straight to a useful website, service, or official source.
Practical help for the questions that come up before and after moving to the Netherlands.

Prefer to read? Or just need a quick answer? SecondSoil also includes clear, to-the-point articles in plain English, with both free and Premium content.
SecondSoil brings useful information together in one place. Go straight to carefully selected Dutch websites, official information, services, and resources without having to search for everything yourself.
SecondSoil is built around the things Elizabeth has learned, used, discovered, and wished someone had explained when she first moved to the Netherlands in 2013.
There’s a huge amount of information about Dutch life somewhere on the internet. But having a personal guide who has been through many of the same things can make all the difference.
SecondSoil is not an automatically generated collection of relocation content. The app has been professionally developed, while its audio content is created and recorded by a real person with first-hand experience of building a life in the Netherlands.
SecondSoil is designed to help well beyond your first few weeks in the Netherlands.
SecondSoil was created by Elizabeth Joss, a South African expat who has spent more than a decade living in the Netherlands and is the owner of WordWorx B.V., a corporate communications agency specialising in sustainability, ESG reporting, and corporate content. The app was professionally developed by lead developer Grant Barnard.
Having arrived in The Hague all alone and with a single suitcase back in 2013, Elizabeth has had to navigate many of the same things other international residents encounter, from Dutch paperwork, healthcare, insurance, and housing to cycling, weather, shopping, language, and the smaller everyday systems that can be surprisingly difficult to understand.
SecondSoil grew from a simple idea: bring those lessons together in one place and make them easy to listen to, read, and use.
